OOST-JAVA – MAJAPAHIT PERIODE (ca 1293 – ca 1500) collectie van 13 originele sculptuurtjes uit het hoogtepunt van het hindoe-boeddhistische Majapahit – koninkrijk (1292 – 1478) in terracotta : “Kopjes” – van 5 tot 16 cm – telkens gemonteerd Volgens archeologen maakten deze hoofdjes deel uit van een nu nog bijzonder weinig voorkomende corpus, daar de beeldjes ritueel gebroken werden (een praktijk , die ook in Thailand en India bekend was) . Het feit dat het meestal om vrouwenhoofdjes gaat , doet hen denken aan vruchtbaarheidsbeeldjes , die onthoofd werden tijdens de meest kritieke fase in het leven van een vrouw , nl. bij de bevalling. Aldus zouden de gevaren waaraan de vrouw blootstaat afgewend worden op haar terracotta – evenbeeld.

Java Majapahit period head sculptures in earthenware According to archaeologists, these heads formed part of a now extremely rare corpus, as the figurines were ritually broken (a practice also known in Thailand and India). The fact that they are mostly female heads reminds them of fertility figurines, which were beheaded during the most critical phase of a woman’s life, namely childbirth. Thus, the dangers to which the woman is exposed would be averted onto her terracotta likeness.
