NOORD-OOST INDIA – PALA PERIODE – 11°/12° EEUW stèle (92 x 50) in zwarte hardsteen met de voorstelling van Boeddha Sakyamuni, zittend op een dubbele lotustroon in dhyanasana, de linkerhand in dhayan mudra (meditatiegebaar) en de rechterhand in bhumisparsha (de aarde als getuige nemend). Het gezicht in een serene gelaatsuitdrukking, langgerekte oorlellen en het haar gerangschikt in cirkelvormige krullen en het hoofd omringd door een bladvormig aureool. Het lichaam is bedekt met een nauwe sanghati. Boeddha bevindt zich in de staat ‘parinirvana’ en wordt bovenaan geflankeerd door twee apsara’s (hemelse nimfen) en aan weerszijden door volgelingen. De sculptuur is een typisch voorbeeld van de Pala-beeldhouwkunst die ontwikkelde uit Griekse, Syrische en Perziche sculpturele tradities. Pas vanaf de 10° eeuw werd er kledij, juwelen en achtergrond aangebracht in de Pala sculpturen

11/12th Cent. Northeast Indian Pala period stele in black hardstone depicting Buddha Shakyamuni seated on a double lotus throne in dhyanasana. His left hand is held in dhyana mudra (the gesture of meditation), while his right hand is in bhumisparsha mudra (calling the earth to witness). The face bears a serene expression, with elongated earlobes, and the hair is arranged in circular curls. The head is surrounded by a leaf-shaped halo. The body is covered by a close-fitting sanghati (monastic robe). The Buddha is shown in the state of parinirvana and is flanked above by two apsaras (celestial nymphs), while followers are depicted on either side. The sculpture is a typical example of Pala art, which developed from Greek, Syrian, and Persian sculptural traditions. It was only from the 10th century onward that clothing, jewelry, and elaborate backgrounds began to be incorporated into Pala sculptures.
